Product labeling is now recognized as a fundamental component of regulatory compliance. The 2005 introduction of XML into the labeling process has evolved to where, in the US, the FDA now accepts SPL (Structure Product Labeling) submissions in XML; and, in the EU, the EMEA (European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products) accepts PIM (Product Information Management) compliant documents. Both the SPL and PIM standards address the critical issue of inconsistency in labeling content.
